Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair (June Fair) opens its door

June 2014

Key players in the world’s jewellery trade will gather once again in Hong Kong when the June Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair (June Fair) opens its door today. Reputed as one of Asia’s top three fine jewellery events, the Fair will run until 22 June at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair (June Fair) opens its door

The June Fair is celebrating its 27th anniversary this year. This is the biggest June edition so far, with gross exhibition space reaching a record 70,000 square metres. Despite its massive scale, the Fair remains easy to navigate under the product sectorisation initiative. Some of the theme pavilions, including the Gemstone, Diamond and Pearl Pavilions, are in new locations this year to accommodate additional exhibitors. There are 1,892 exhibitors at this edition, up around 3% from last year.

“The new hall arrangement answers the increasing demand of exhibition space,” said Celine Lau, Director of Jewellery Fairs, UBM Asia. “One of the bigger theme pavilions, the Gemstone Pavilion, in Halls 5E, F, G & Concourse houses over 400 gemstone suppliers. The Diamond Pavilion is now in Halls 3B, C, D & E with more than 450 diamantaires. It is the biggest Diamond Pavilion since it debuted in the June Fair. It also remains as one of the biggest diamond showcases in any other fair worldwide,” said Ms Lau.

The June Fair is ideal for international jewellers to replenish their stocks in the middle of the year, noted Ms Lau. “It is a diverse marketplace where buyers can source loose materials such as diamonds, pearls and gemstones, as well as fine finished jewellery under one roof. To save costs, jewellery manufacturers and retailer tend to replenish their inventory more often and in smaller quantities. Thus, the fair’s June timing is just right for jewellers to restock on inventory in between two traditional sourcing seasons,” she said.

Ms Lau is positive about the visitor figures. “The June Fair attracts over 60% of buyers from outside Hong Kong every year, including Asia-Pacific, Europe and the United States etc. Although the luxury market in China has slowed down this year, it is a healthy market adjustment following a rapid growth for several years. We still expect a very healthy turnout of buyers from China, not only from first-tier cities but second- and third-tier cities as well. With UBM Asia’s powerful database and extensive network, we will be bringing to the Fair a few delegations of about 300 qualified buyers from mainland China. This confirms that Hong Kong remains the key international marketplace for mainland buyers”
