Montegrappa - The Alchemist Pen.

April 2012

It is one of the most widely-read and deeply-loved books of all time. Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is an adventure and a parable, an allegorical tale in the tradition of the great picaresque novels of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Alchemist has now sold more than 65 million copies. It has been translated into more than 70 languages, the 71st being Maltese. It has earned the Guinness World Record for the “Most Translated Book By A Living Author”.

Montegrappa decided to honour this exceptional work with the Alchemist Pen.

The artisans of Montegrappa have fashioned a form that encompasses the myriad symbols embedded in the story. Using the lost wax technique of casting, the pen is decorated with representations of the Sun and the Moon on the cap, the band onto which Sun and Moon are attached incorporating a rotating mechanism that gives the same tactile sensation as the winding and time-setting of a mechanical watch.

The Alchemist Pen will be issued in an edition of 1987 fountain pens and roller balls in total, in honour of the year that The Alchemist was published. A further 1000 pens will be produced entirely in sterling silver with accents in translucent enamel.

There will be four colours of enamel, representing the four elements: air, fire, earth and water. Only 125 fountain pens and 125 roller balls will be made in each colour. Lastly, 16 pens (8 fountain pens and 8 roller balls) will be produced in gold with diamond enhancements, these precious gems symbolising the riches that feature prominently in the saga.
